Our Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to provide learning experiences that help children become learners who are self-motivated and independent. Children will learn about themselves and their world within an environment filled with care and positive support.

Below is an overview of our core integrated curriculum.
Practical Life
One of the first goals is to develop in the very young child a strong and realistic sense of independence and self-reliance. This area of the curriculum focuses on a variety of developmentally appropriate activities to assist the child in developing:

a high level of concentration
a sense of order
pride in a job well done
an increasing sense of independence by learning to
    care for himself and the environment
respect for the environment, classmates, and
fine motor skills

These activities aim to provide a solid humanistic foundation for life.
The ultimate goal of the Sensorial exercises is intellectual growth. This area concentrates on training the child's senses and contains materials that help the child refine his or her experience of sight, sound, touch, taste and smell. It is with these materials that a child will learn to compare, contrast, and differentiate various sense impressions. It is the beginning of a child’s “conscious knowledge” of his environment. Doing these activities that use the fine motor skills assists the child in discovering that perseverance produces positive results. The improved dexterity strengthens concentration and assists in character building during the learning process and provides groundwork for development of other skills such as music, math and language.
The purpose of this area is to give the child an awareness of the power of language and an appreciation of the beauty language can express. The ability to acquire language is innate. The Montessori materials are designed to give order and form to the experiences necessary for language acquisition, both in reading and writing. The language materials include objects and pictures to be named, matched, labelled, and classified to aid vocabulary development.

We also use the Jolly Phonics program and Evan-Moor materials to facilitate the children’s understanding and better grasp in phonics. At later stage, the children will learn grammar, correct sentence structure, comprehension and writing.
Math is a concrete experience in the Montessori classroom. The Math area allows the child to develop his thinking, reasoning, and problem solving powers. The direct aim of the Math materials is to help the child work toward more abstract thinking. The materials are designed with such precision that they allow the child to work with the concrete until he internalizes the process through tactile and visual contact and can work independently in his mind. The awareness of details gained in the Practical Life area and the decision-making skills learned in the Sensorial area help the child refine his use of the Math materials.
Culture Awareness & Science
At around three years old, children begin to ask “why?” Why is a worm wiggly, why does a flower grow, why do I have to be quiet? Ultimately culture awareness and science allows us to label, define and explain the processes and elements of life around us. It expands the young child’s vocabulary and enhances his vision of the world and all its life, and shows her that she can have an impact on her environment. It is an integral element of the Montessori curriculum. Among other things, it represents a way of life: a clear thinking approach to gathering information and problem solving.
Art and Music

The Montessori curriculum seeks to arouse children’s natural interest in art and music. They offer children ways to express themselves, their feelings, experiences and aid the development of creativities and ideas.
Extended approach: Inquiry based approach for 5 & 6 years old
Young children of ages 5 and 6 years at Lil’ EliteHouse are offered many opportunities to engage in a wide range of materials and resources that extend and challenge their thinking, which in turn encourage them to be competent thinkers and communicators. On top of the Montessori curriculum, students explore traditional subject areas through units of inquiry. These subject areas are organised around themes that provide the framework for the exploration of knowledge and with series of exercises and work sessions. Example, if the theme is on the subject about ‘Float or Sink’. The Directress will explain the meaning and reasons of the topics. Children will be given a task to find few items from home and conduct a simulation in school and share with the group. Then, all children are encouraged to develop a short summary or a sketch summary of the items they brought to the school with a summary explanation of what they have observed and understood.

Through the inquiry-based approach, our children cultivate an understanding of essential concepts, attain important skills and knowledge, develop individual attitudes, and learn socially responsible actions.
